Ceiling Work Is Different from Deck Work
An outdoor ceiling is not a deck installed overhead. The fastening system must be concealed, the boards must be precisely milled for tight joints, and every run must be perfectly level — imperfections that would be hidden underfoot are immediately visible overhead. The material must also be appropriate for the exposure: a covered porch ceiling sees less UV and moisture than a deck surface, but it still faces South Florida's humidity, salt air, and temperature cycling.

Ceiling Materials
Ipe Hardwood
The premium choice for outdoor ceilings in Florida's coastal environment. Naturally resistant to moisture and insects without chemical treatment. Rich, dark colour that weathers to silver-grey if left untreated, or maintains its warm tone with periodic oiling. Appropriate for covered and semi-exposed applications.
ThermoWood
Thermally modified wood — kiln-treated at high temperature to reduce moisture absorption and improve dimensional stability. A lighter-toned alternative to Ipe with excellent performance in covered outdoor applications. Used on the Maximo ceiling installation in the Deckmasters portfolio.
Exterior PVC
100% cellular PVC tongue and groove boards engineered for exterior ceiling applications. Completely impervious to moisture — appropriate for high-humidity environments, pool enclosures, and covered areas with direct water exposure. Does not require oiling or sealing.
Cedar
Western Red Cedar is a traditional choice for porch and lanai ceilings — lighter in weight than Ipe, naturally resistant to moisture and insects, and easy to finish. Appropriate for covered applications with limited direct exposure.
What Correct Installation Looks Like
Every board is face-checked for consistent thickness before installation begins — inconsistent boards produce visible gaps at the joints. Fasteners are concealed through the tongue of each board. Every run is set to a laser level. Transitions at walls, beams, and light fixtures are detailed cleanly. The result is a ceiling that reads as a single, continuous surface — not a collection of individual boards.
